What SAP Designation Does for Georgia Drivers

Designating a SAP links the selected DOT-qualified professional to your Clearinghouse return-to-duty record. Once the SAP accepts the request, the SAP can report the date of the initial assessment and, later, the date you are determined eligible for return-to-duty testing.

Designation does not automatically schedule an appointment. It also does not mean you have completed the SAP process. Contacting the SAP office and completing its intake requirements are separate practical steps.

The SAP Accepts Your Clearinghouse Request

FMCSA instructs drivers to establish a relationship with a SAP before sending the designation. When the correct request appears, the SAP reviews and accepts it. If you selected the wrong professional or the request does not appear, the issue should be corrected before the evaluation so the right SAP can complete required reporting.

For a Georgia driver, it is helpful to confirm the SAP’s name and practice information before submitting the designation. After submitting it, contact the practice rather than waiting for the Clearinghouse alone to move the appointment forward.

You Complete Intake and Schedule the Georgia SAP Evaluation

The next step is completing intake forms, identity verification, consent documents, and scheduling. For a virtual appointment, you need to be physically located in Georgia, use a private setting, and have reliable real-time audio and video.

A driver can complete this stage without a current employer. You do not need an employer to designate a SAP, schedule the evaluation, complete the initial SAP evaluation, or begin the SAP’s required education and/or treatment recommendation.

The Initial SAP Evaluation Determines the Recommendation

During the initial evaluation, the SAP makes a clinical assessment and determines what education and/or treatment is required under the DOT process. The recommendation is individualized and cannot be promised in advance.

After the evaluation, the SAP reports the initial assessment date to the Clearinghouse. That entry is a process milestone; it does not make the driver eligible for return-to-duty testing.

You Complete the Required Education or Treatment

The driver must successfully complete the SAP’s recommendation before the follow-up evaluation. Timing varies based on what is recommended, provider availability, participation, and how quickly completion documentation reaches the SAP.

The SAP reviews information from the education or treatment provider and conducts a follow-up evaluation. If the driver demonstrates successful compliance, the SAP reports the driver’s eligibility for return-to-duty testing in the Clearinghouse.

What Happens When You Become Eligible for Return-to-Duty Testing

Eligibility for testing is not the same as a negative return-to-duty test, reinstatement, or permission to resume safety-sensitive work. The return-to-duty test must be handled through the proper FMCSA employer or C/TPA process, and the required negative result must be reported before the driver’s Clearinghouse status can change as applicable.

If you have no current or prospective employer at that stage, current FMCSA guidance describes a limited owner-operator and designated C/TPA pathway that may be used to direct the return-to-duty test and report the negative result. Follow-up testing must later be administered by the employer when the driver resumes DOT safety-sensitive work.

Common Georgia Clearinghouse Mistakes to Avoid

Do not assume the designation schedules your appointment. Do not wait for an employer before beginning the SAP evaluation and recommendation. Do not ask the SAP to order the return-to-duty test, because that responsibility belongs to the employer or properly designated C/TPA. Keep copies of your completion documentation and verify that each Clearinghouse milestone appears at the correct stage.
