You handle your responsibilities, but by the end of the day you find yourself relying on drinking, marijuana, pornography, or gambling just to quiet your mind. You’ve tried to cut back or reset, and for a while, it works, until you end up right back in the same cycle. I work with men who feel stuck in that pattern. This isn’t about labeling you, it’s about understanding what’s driving it and helping you start to change it before it keeps taking up more space.

This doesn’t usually look extreme. It looks more like:

  • You’re handling your responsibilities, but it’s taking more out of you than it should

  • You’ve tried to cut back or reset, and it works, for a while

  • You keep going back and forth on whether it’s actually a problem

  • You’re relying on drinking, marijuana, pornography, or gambling more than you want to

  • You feel more mentally drained, distracted, or checked out than you used to be

  • It’s not out of control, but it’s not staying where it is either

It’s not really about the behavior

Alcohol, pornography, gambling, or other habits usually start as a way to deal with something, such as stress, pressure, boredom, disconnection, or just needing a break from your own head. In the moment, it works. That’s why it sticks. But over time, it turns into a pattern that feels harder to step out of, even when you’ve told yourself you’ll handle it differently. Counseling focuses on understanding what’s underneath it so you can start changing the pattern, not just managing the behavior.

Why it’s hard to stop once it starts

Once the pattern is there, it’s not just a matter of deciding to stop. Part of you wants to change it, but another part of you knows exactly what it gives you in the moment. Relief, escape, distraction, a way to shut things off.

That’s what creates the back-and-forth. You can go days or weeks feeling in control, and then something shifts and you’re right back in it.

Where This Starts to Show Up with Your Wife or Girlfriend

This usually shows up most in your relationship. You’re there, but not fully there. More distracted, less present, or harder to connect the way you want to. Small things turn into tension, or conversations feel shorter and more reactive than they should. Nothing may be falling apart, but it’s not where you want it to be. And over time, that gap starts to grow.

What Starts to Change

Change doesn’t happen all at once, but it does start to feel different. You begin to notice more space between the urge and what you do next. The pattern feels less automatic, and you’re able to follow through more often on what you already decided earlier. It’s not about getting it perfect. It’s about things starting to feel more steady and more intentional over time.

What Working Together Looks Like

We focus on what’s actually happening in real time, not just what you wish was happening. That means slowing things down and looking at specific moments: what was going on before, what you were thinking, and what pulled you back into it. Over time, that starts to make the pattern easier to recognize while it’s happening.

Sessions are direct and grounded. We’re not overanalyzing, we’re working toward changes you can actually follow through on during the week.

Group Therapy for Men

A structured virtual group for men working through substance use, behavioral patterns, and the pressure that builds over time. This group is designed for men who are functioning in their day-to-day lives but know something isn’t fully aligned, whether that’s alcohol use, other behaviors, or the way stress is being managed.

 

Group sessions focus on accountability and consistency, real conversations without shame, substance use and behavioral patterns, emotional awareness and regulation, and practical tools for long-term change.

 

This is an open group, and you can join at any time.

 

The group begins May 4th and meets Mondays at 6:00 PM (virtual), with participation limited to 10 members to maintain a focused and effective environment.
