Affordable DOT SAP Evaluations: Payment Plans Available

If you recently received a DOT drug or alcohol violation, one of your first questions may be, “How much is this going to cost?” Drivers are generally responsible for DOT SAP expenses because the federal return-to-duty process is separate from ordinary insurance-based counseling benefits.

Three Corners Counseling offers a flat-rate SAP fee, flexible payment options, and virtual appointments for eligible drivers physically located in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, or Tennessee at the time of service.

What Is a DOT SAP Evaluation?

A DOT SAP evaluation is required when a safety-sensitive employee violates a DOT drug and alcohol regulation. Before returning to safety-sensitive duties, the employee must complete the return-to-duty process under 49 CFR Part 40.

A DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional completes the initial evaluation, makes an education or treatment recommendation, reviews completion documentation, conducts the follow-up evaluation, and reports required eligibility information. For FMCSA-regulated CDL drivers, the process is connected to the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

How Much Does a DOT SAP Evaluation Cost?

At Three Corners Counseling, the SAP fee is a flat $400. The fee includes the initial evaluation, follow-up evaluation, FMCSA Clearinghouse reporting when applicable, return-to-duty guidance, and communication throughout the SAP process.

Education, treatment, testing, and other third-party services are separate from the SAP fee and may involve additional costs. The SAP recommendation is individualized, so a specific recommendation or total outside cost cannot be promised before the evaluation.

Affordable DOT SAP Evaluations With Payment Plans

Eligible clients may be able to pay over time through Affirm, Klarna, or Afterpay. Direct payment arrangements may also be available through Three Corners Counseling. Approval and terms for third-party financing are determined by the financing provider.

Using a payment option does not change DOT requirements. Once scheduling, intake, and payment arrangements are complete, the evaluation proceeds according to the same federal process.

How Long Does the Return-to-Duty Process Take?

The timeline varies by driver. It depends on appointment availability, the individual SAP recommendation, how quickly required education or treatment is completed, when documentation reaches the SAP, and when the follow-up evaluation can occur. No provider can guarantee a completion date or employment outcome.

Do I Need an Employer Before Starting the SAP Process?

No. A driver may complete the SAP evaluation and recommendation before securing a new employer. After the SAP reports return-to-duty testing eligibility, a DOT-regulated employer or authorized consortium/third-party administrator—not the SAP—must arrange the directly observed return-to-duty test.

Virtual DOT SAP Evaluations in Five States

Three Corners Counseling provides virtual DOT SAP evaluations for eligible individuals who are physically located in one of these approved service states during the appointment:

  • North Carolina

  • South Carolina

  • Georgia

  • Virginia

  • Tennessee

Tennessee availability applies specifically to DOT SAP evaluations. It does not represent an offer of licensed therapy or addiction counseling services in Tennessee.

Virtual appointments require a private setting, reliable internet, working audio and video, valid identification, and physical presence in an approved state. Scheduling availability varies.
