I tested positive on a pre-employment DOT test - what happens now?

You must complete the Return-to-Duty (RTD) process with a DOT-qualified SAP before operating safety-sensitive duties again. That includes an initial SAP eval, completing education/treatment, a follow-up SAP eval, and an employer-sent RTD test.

How fast is the RTD timeline?

The timeline depends on how quickly you complete the recommended education or treatment, but most clients finish the entire DOT SAP process in as little as 1 to 4 weeks. I offer next-day appointments, fast documentation, and responsive communication to help you return to duty as efficiently as possible. Your commitment to completing the required steps determines the overall pace.

Understanding the Return-to-Duty Process

The DOT Return-to-Duty process is a federally regulated procedure that employees must complete after a drug or alcohol violation. It begins with an evaluation by me, a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), followed by a personalized education or treatment plan. After completing the recommended program, you return for a follow-up SAP evaluation. If compliant, I provide a report authorizing the return-to-duty drug test. This process ensures you are safe to return to safety-sensitive duties and includes a follow-up testing schedule monitored by your employer.

Step 1: Initial SAP Evaluation
Step 2: Treatment or Education
Step 3: Follow-Up SAP Evaluation
Step 4: Return-to-Duty Testing
Step 5: Follow-Up Testing Plan

Who Needs a SAP Evaluation?

A SAP evaluation is required for any DOT-regulated employee who has violated federal drug and alcohol testing regulations. This includes commercial drivers (CDL holders), airline personnel, railroad workers, transit employees, and others in safety-sensitive positions. Common violations include a positive drug test, alcohol test above the legal limit, refusal to test, or other DOT-defined infractions. Before returning to duty, these individuals must complete a SAP evaluation and follow all steps outlined in the FMCSA Clearinghouse process.

What to Expect During the Evaluation

During a DOT SAP evaluation, you’ll meet with me, a qualified Substance Abuse Professional, to discuss your substance use history, the circumstances of your DOT violation, and your overall readiness to return to safety-sensitive work. The evaluation is confidential and nonjudgmental, focusing on your well-being and compliance with DOT regulations. Based on this assessment, I will recommend a personalized education or treatment plan, which must be completed before you can take a return-to-duty drug test. Virtual SAP evaluations are available for convenience and are in full compliance with FMCSA and Clearinghouse requirements.
